How Should a Bra Fit?

Are you ready to take off your bra at the end of the day? If you are constantly readjusting your bra or feeling uncomfortable throughout the day, you might need to look into a different bra size or style. GAGLI is here to help you find your true bra size and the right style that fits your needs.

Finding the right bra size for your body will make you feel comfortable all day long, support your structure, and achieve that perfect aesthetic result. This guide shows how a bra should fit and teaches you how to measure yourself for the right size.

Signs of a Poorly Fitting Bra

If you are experiencing any of these problems, your bra may not be correctly sized for you:

  • Your shoulder straps keep falling down throughout the day
  • The underwire is poking or digging into you
  • When you remove your bra, you have bra lines on your skin
  • There are holes in the cups of your bra.
  • You have spillage happening over the cups of your bra.
  • One may experience discomfort or an urgent desire to remove their bra.

Methods for Addressing Bra Fit Problems

Adjustable shoulder straps

If your shoulder straps keep falling down, the simplest solution is to tighten them. Over time, as you wear your bra, it can occur that the material loosens, so you need to tighten up the shoulder straps to account for this.

If possible, shorten your straps to the shortest length. Try tightening the bra band by using one more set of hooks. A band that is too loose can cause straps to fall off the shoulders. Another option would be trying a bra with convertible cross-back straps like our Weightless Demi Bra, or the Long-line bra, which has a pullover design with soft and smoothing straps.

Poking underwire

Nothing is more uncomfortable than underwire that pokes or digs into your side. However, this can be avoided. If you find that your underwire is poking into you, then it is probable that either your band size or your cup size is too small, or both. So, it is better to remeasure yourself so that you can have a fresh beginning with the right size.

The good news is that GAGLI has got bra solutions to solve the problem; the company is using a flexible underwire and also wireless bra so customers will be able to get through their day comfortably.

A more comfortable underwire.

GAGLI has some underwire styles available in cups A-H, and flexible underwire provides comfort while wearing, even if you fall in between sizes. We recommend you try the Fits Everybody T-shirt Bra: It’s a super comfy bra because it’s extremely stretchy!

Wireless bra alternatives

For those in the market for bra solutions sans underwire, GAGLI offers a range of wireless bras that are supportive and come with push-up pads—no underwire needed. Try, for instance, the Wireless Push-Up Plunge Bra, featuring a flattering plunge with cloud-like push-up foam pads.

Your bra makes an impression

And not always in a good way. If you get those telltale marks on your skin after wearing a bra all day, it’s simply too tight. Pay attention to where the marks are. If they’re across your back or under your arms, you probably need a larger band size. Re-measure yourself using the Bra Calculator steps below to make sure you’re getting the right size.

If you get marks on your shoulders where your straps hit, then either the straps are too tight or the bra style isn’t right for you. Check out our Bra Guide to see the full line of GAGLI bra silhouettes and bra lining options. GAGLI bras lift, shape, and support in so many different styles.

Mind the gaps

When the cups of a bra display gaps at the top, it often shows through one’s shirt and implies too much room. There are a few fixes that one might try.

First, you need to tighten your straps a little. Then, lean forward and ensure that your entire breast fits into the cup and that the underwire sits properly in its place. If you still have too much space left in every cup, try a smaller cup size. Remember that your cup size may change over time due to other factors, like having had a pregnancy, nursed a baby, or experienced weight changes.

It is advisable to try different bra styles, as some cuts are going to offer better support for your bust than others. Very minimal, or no padding at all, bras will be more likely to fit your breasts better, then styles like our Scoop Bras have a flattering scoop-neckline, so having less material minimizes the gap. Another comfortable option that still gives an ultra-flattering shape is the Unlined Demi Bra, which most likely will fit your decolletage better.

Spilling over

If you have the reverse issue, where your breast tissue pours out of your cups, you should consider either a larger cup size, a bigger band, or a bra style with more coverage.

While lifting push-up bra styles are made to increase volume and cleavage, you must still stay entirely contained. It’s a good idea to re-measure yourself to see if your band or cups might need an upgrade.

Feel the ultimate comfort and great looks of our T-shirt bras, also available in cotton jersey for a more versatile style that gives you extra coverage. Alternatively, if you want the look of no bra under your clothes, try either the No-Show Molded Demi Bra or the No-Show Balconette Bra. Either is designed to lie flat against your body for a smooth finish.

Your bra doesn’t stay put

And finally, your bra should lie flat against your body.

If the small piece of fabric between your breasts, often called the “gore,” pops out from your body, try a bigger cup size. If that doesn’t work, try another style where the pieces sit a little differently between the breasts, like the Naked Scoop Bra with a smoothing, buttery-soft band.

If the underwire or the band that lies directly underneath your breasts does lift off your body, there are two solutions to try. First, try loosening your shoulder straps so that the bottom of the bra isn’t fighting the tension of the straps. If that doesn’t work, try re-measuring yourself; most likely, your band size is too small.

How to Tell If Your Bra Fits Right

Your bra fits just right when:

  • You feel sustained and comfortable throughout the day!
  • The band of the bra is straight from front to back and doesn’t ride up.
  • Your cups touch your breast tissue-no space and no spillage The shoulder straps are tightened just right, providing ample support without causing pain from them digging into the shoulders.
  • There’s no poking or pain from under wires or straps.
  • You’re getting the lift, shape, and support you desire.

How to accurately measure oneself to determine the ideal bra size.

Determining Your Underband Measurement

For the most accurate measurement, it is generally best to wear a wired, non-padded bra. Position the measuring tape snug against your back and directly under your bust where the band of your bra would sit. The measuring tape should be level with the floor. If someone else is taking the measurement, keep your arms at your sides. Take a deep breath in and pull the measuring tape tight appropriately, then take your measurement.

Measuring Your Bust Size

Slip the measuring tape across your back at band level and under each arm, around the fullest part of your bust. Keep the measuring tape parallel to the floor. If someone else is taking your measurement, keep your arms at your sides. Gently pull the tape and take a deep breath in and out before taking your measurement. Based on your bust and band measurements, discover your size using the GAGLI bra size calculator.
